Why this exists
WhyItFailed started as a frustration. Spend any time in r/3dprinting, r/BambuLab, or the half-dozen big Discord servers and you’ll see the same five questions every day: why is my first layer fuzzy, why are my corners lifting, why is my print stringy, why does it look like spaghetti, why won’t my filament feed. Each one has a real answer that depends on the specific printer, slicer settings, material, and surface — and each one almost always ends up as a forty-comment thread before anyone gets the right fix.
The tool exists to short-circuit that. Upload a photo, tell us your printer and material, and an AI trained for this niche reasons about the specific failure pattern in front of it. You get three ranked fixes calibrated to your setup — usually in about twenty seconds.
Who’s behind it
Owen Drysdale
Lead editor
Owen has been 3D printing for over three years and runs a small print farm — ten-plus Bambu Lab and Creality machines, mixing open-frame and enclosed CoreXY platforms, AMS-style multi-material setups, and a rotation of stock and aftermarket hotends. That volume means he’s seen most common failure modes more than once, on more than one printer. He writes the troubleshooting guides on this site and reviews every diagnosis prompt before it ships to users.
How we keep it honest
- Diagnoses are AI-generated; guides are not. Photo diagnoses use the Anthropic Claude API. Every blog guide on this site is human-written and edited by Owen — none of them are produced by an LLM unattended.
- We don’t store your photos. They’re sent to the diagnosis API and discarded. Diagnosis text is retained so we can keep tuning the system. Full privacy policy.
- We aren’t affiliated with any printer manufacturer. Coverage and recommendations don’t favor any brand. When we link to products on Amazon we use affiliate links; full disclosure here.
- Settings recommendations are starting points, not commands. Always verify against your printer’s documentation before flashing firmware or changing mechanical setup.
